RAIL:

The Empire Builder, Amtrak's northernmost and premier route, stops at Whitefish at very convenient hours.

From the west, arrival is at 7:25 a.m., perfectly timed for a full day of skiing. Depart back to the west after your final day of skiing at 9:16 p.m.

From the east, enjoy dinner and sunset on the train, and arrive in Whitefish at 8:56 p.m. Eastbound departure is at 7:46 a.m.

DRIVING:

In the US, take Interstate 90 until you're eight miles east of Missoula. Take US Highway 93 north to Kalispell. From there, continue north to Whitefish. From Whitefish, turn north on State Road 487 (Baker/Wisconsin Ave.). Travel 2.4 miles, then look for the sign to Big Mountain Ski Resort (flashing light), turn right and go up 5 miles. Take the first right after Kandahar lodge. The address is 3808 Alpine Village Drive.

From Seattle/Spokane on good roads, the following directions will save you 2 hours of driving: Take I-90 to exit #33, St. Regis. Then proceed east on highway 135 to its junction with highway 200. Turn left onto highway 200 heading north. At Plains, turn right on highway 28 and follow it to its junction with highway 93 near Elmo. Turn left onto highway 93 and head north to Whitefish.

From Canada, Whitefish is just a short 100 km drive south from the Canadian-USA border via Highway 93. We're 500 kms from Calgary, 450 kms from Banff, 350 kms from Lethbridge, and 160 kms from Fernie. The majority of Canadians motorists travel to Whitefish via Crowsnest Pass (Highway #3) to Fernie and onto Highway 93. Skiers from Lethbridge, Saskatchewan, Manitoba sometimes approach the USA boarder via Highway 2 or Highway 4 and travel to Whitefish through Browning, Montana.
